The suppliers of our brewing ingredients for the brewing process are a critical part of the real ale lifecycle. The cycle begins with the ‘grain’ – the barley farmer, maltster and certified seed supplier.
Brewing ingredient – the grain
Hampshire based barley merchant Robin Appel and Warminster Maltings are long standing brewing ingredient suppliers to Flack Manor. Warminster Maltings is situated in the Wiltshire town of Warminster, on the western tip of Salisbury Plain and has been continuously making malt for the brewing industry since 1855. What makes Warminster Maltings so very special is that it continues to make malt in the traditional way, by hand, on floors, almost totally unchanged from the day the maltings were originally commissioned. Head Maltster Chris Garratt and his team use this gentle, natural process because it is now widely acknowledged that this method produces a superior product particularly suited to traditional and craft brewers.
Brewing ingredient – the hops
Specialist Hop Growers (and Hop Merchants) are also important to the real ale lifecycle. English Sovereign and First Gold Hops are used by Flack Manor Brewery, who have close ties with the Hop Association, headed by Dr Peter Darby, hop researcher and the public figurehead behind Wye Hops Ltd. Established in March 2007, Wye Hops Ltd is a subsidiary of the British Hop Association and is the vital research centre for the British Hop industry.
Nurturing the process
Flack adds liquor (water) and creates the magic blend ready to cask and store in the chiller, for later distribution. You can read more about the brewing process in our eBook Modern Brewing; traditional methods. Little goes to waste – spent grain is recycled to feed cattle, yeast to feed pigs and spent hops are also recycled.
Each supplier to the real ale lifecycle, from vital ingredients to casks to clarifying agents, has their story to tell and we begin to realise how dependent we are upon each other to deliver the perfect pint.
What our suppliers say about us
Our special ingredient suppliers have some very kind words to say about us. These comments were made in reference to Flack Manor’s Open Day and official opening late September 2014
“Flack Manor’s Open Day was the epitome of all that achieved by those most successful new breweries driving the ‘Independent’ beer revolution across the UK. Nigel and his team’s commitment to an uncompromising and transparent supply chain for his ingredients in order to achieve his passion for brewing beers with taste and character is what it is all about.” Robin Appel, owner of Robin Appel Corn merchants and Warminster Maltings
“It was good to see a new brewery keeping close to its heritage and placing importance on its local connections. In particular, I was pleased to see Flack Manor Brewery taking pride in being a loyal supporter of the British hop industry using only British-grown hops in all its brews and championing some of the more recent varieties such as First Gold and Sovereign” Dr Peter Darby of Wye Hops.
