A national champion barley is being used in our new bottled Hedge Hop launching on 20th November.
It’s the 50th Anniversary of Maris Otter Barley, the ‘Rolls Royce’ of grain varieties amongst us brewers. What brings this so much closer to home is all down to Hampshire based Robin Appel grain merchants launching a National Barley competition to commemorate 50 years of production in the UK. With Maris Otter Plant Breeder’s Rights, Robin Appel set about to form a judging panel, of which our esteemed director, Nigel Welsh was part.
The competition sought to discover which producer in the UK was producing the best crop and the final round attracted some 70 growers nationwide. The winner was unanimously Maxted Farm from Berkshire, whose barley is malted by Warminster Maltings who, in turn, has a long established relationship with our brewery.
In traditional style, the winner takes 1000 Guineas first prize and, 500 bottles of Hedge Hop beer brewed by Flack Manor from the winning barley. The second and third prizes win a tonne and half a tonne of seed and 250 and 100 bottles respectively.
The winners, Mr and Mrs Maxted will be coming to the brewery on the afternoon of the launch day of 20th November to pick up their prize, along with Robin Appel and Chris Garratt from Warminster Maltings, plus other guests.
We’ll have plenty of draught and bottled Hedge Hop in stock and friends of Flack are welcome to call by for a ½ pint free sample on Friday 20th November from 11am – 6pm
